Lord Krishna had gone out of Dwarka with His brother Balarama. At that time, Krishna's 16,108 queens asked Balarama's mother, Rohini, "We serve Krishna with such devotion, yet why does He keep chanting Radha's name all day long?" Mother Rohini replied,"I will tell you, provided Krishna and Balarama do not enter the palace." After some discussion, the queens stationed Subhadra at the entrance to keep watch and instructed her not to let anyone in. Then, Mother Rohini began telling the story. Subhadra pressed her ear against the door to listen to the story being narrated inside. When Krishna and Balarama returned, they saw Subhadra standing with her ear pressed against the door. As they began to enter the palace, Subhadra stopped them; consequently, Krishna and Balarama also pressed their ears against the doorway to listen to the story, just as Subhadra had done. Suddenly, overcome by deep devotion, their limbs began to retract, and their eyes widened. When Narada Muni arrived in Dwarka to meet Lord Krishna, he observed that the Lord's hands and feet had contracted and His eyes had grown large. Narada Muni urged Lord Krishna to reveal this form to the world, and the Lord promised him that He would do so in the Kali Yuga.
